Suicide is now the biggest killer of teenage girls worldwide

A new report from the World Health Organization has found that suicide is the leading cause of death worldwide for girls between the ages of 15 and 19 years.

Suicide now outranks accidents, illnesses and complications from pregnancy, which was previously thought to be the number one killer of girls in this age group.

Though suicide is first overall, there are important regional variations: suicide vastly outranks other causes of death in Europe, but in Africa, pregnancy and HIV are bigger killers. Africa is the only region where suicide is not among the top three causes of death for teenage girls.Screenshot 2015-06-10 15.30.06
