Amitabh Mattoo is the inaugural Director of the Australia-India Institute. He concurrently serves as Honorary Professor of International Relations at the University of Melbourne and Professor of Disarmament Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

Professor Mattoo is the President of the Indian Association of International Studies and is a Member of the National Knowledge Commission, a high-level advisory group to the Prime Minister of India and the National Security Council’s Advisory Board. He was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu from 2002-2008, the youngest person to serve on that position. He was honoured by the award of Padma Shree in 2008. A member of the Governing council of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, the Nobel Prize winning NGO which campaigns for global disarmament.
