On 29 September 2016, Professor George Patton from the University of Melbourne, who led the Lancet Commission, was joined by several South African experts in adolescent health to discuss the Lancet Commission’s report on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing which was launched on 10th May 2016 in London.
The expert panel at the South African launch, facilitated by SAFM Radio Host Tsepiso Makwetla, confirmed that people concerned with the health of adolescents in South Africa are reaching similar conclusions as the Lancet Commission and showing, in many instances, how they are already acting in areas that the Commission recommends. For example, South Africa has good research capacity in developing and testing interventions for adolescents, that globally are not (yet) being addressed. The launch took place as part of a meeting which collaboratively developed an implementation research agenda on adolescent health programmes in the country.

On the day of the launch, Commissioner chair, Prof George Patton and Commissioner, Dr Jane Ferguson appeared on Morning Live on South African television to discuss the Lancet Commission’s report on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing.
Jane Ferguson, Director of the HAYA Research Unit, outlines the partnership between HAYA Research Unit, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the Africa Centre for Population Health in KwaZulu Natal. The HAYA Research Unit provides an opportunity to study the situation of adolescents in a district of rural South Africa, especially affected by HIV/AIDS amongst other health issues.
